Evita

A West End and Broadway smash hit, Evita tells the story of Eva Duarte’s meteoric rise from poor beginnings to sainthood in Argentina after marrying army colonel-turned-president Juan Perón. Longing for a better life, the teenage Eva persuades tango singer-songwriter Agustin Magaldi to taker her to the Argentinian capital, Buenos Aires, where she is determined to fulfil her ambition of becoming an actress. The narrator, Che, tells of her rise to fame through acting and meeting, and then marrying, Perón, who became president following a military coup. Evita is idolised by the Argentinian people and becomes the most powerful woman in South America, only for her to succumb to cancer at the age of 33. Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice’s memorable score includes Oh What a Circus, I’ll Be Surprisingly Good For You, Another Suitcase Another Hall, High Flying Adored and the unforgettable Don’t Cry For Me Argentina. The success of Evita led to a film adaptation in 1996, starring Madonna as Eva, Antonio Banderas as Che and Jonathan Pryce as Perón.
