SYP is for young people aged between 9 and 19 with a passion for performing, or a keen eye for backstage. We have a cast of 80 incredible performers and 10 youth technicians. We take over the Palace Theatre for 2 weeks over the summer holidays where we create, rehearse, and perform 5 unforgettable performances of a well-known and loved musical to live audiences, led by a professional Creative and Technical Team! About the musical: Shrek the Musical, based on the 2001 DreamWorks film and William Steig’s book, tells the story of Shrek, a solitary green ogre living in a swamp, content with his isolation. His peaceful life is disrupted when a group of fairy tale creatures, banished by the cruel Lord Farquaad, take refuge in his swamp. To reclaim his privacy, Shrek strikes a deal with Farquaad: he will rescue Princess Fiona, whom Farquaad wishes to marry, in exchange for the return of the creatures to their homes. On his journey, Shrek reluctantly befriends Donkey. Together, they navigate obstacles, including a fire-breathing dragon, to reach Fiona’s tower. Fiona, however, is not the typical princess Shrek expects; she harbours a secret curse that transforms her into an ogre at sunset, which can only be broken by true love’s kiss. Marc Bolan, with his band T.Rex, was one of the most flamboyant and charismatic stars of the original glam rock era.  With Bolan's special ingredient of Rock-a-Boogie songs, the band had a string of huge hits throughout the 1970s including Love to Boogie, Telegram Sam, Jeepster and 20th Century Boy. T.Rextasy have now been performing around the world for over 20 years, a career that ironically out lives Marc’s very own T.Rex.  The band is now accepted as the world’s only official live tribute band dedicated to Marc Bolan & T.Rex, and the only band endorsed and approved by Marc Bolan’s family, estate, original ex-members of T.Rex, and Bolan’s catalogue management.  The band has been described by many as ‘beyond the boundaries of tribute’. Singer, composer and actor David Essex OBE comes to Southend as part of a major 21-date nationwide tour for September 2026 titled Thanks for the Memories to celebrate his monumental career. First shooting to fame when he was chosen for the role of Jesus for the London production of Godspell, David received major awards which then saw him lead a cast at the Roundhouse and then in the West End for two years. Legendary singer-songwriter Justin Hayward, the voice of the Moody Blues, will bring The Story In Your Eyes tour to Southend in October. The tour is named for one of Justin’s many compositions for The Moody Blues, which was released as a single 55 years ago and featured on the band’s seventh album Every Good Boy Deserves Favour - also released in 1971. The album reached No. 1 on the UK album chart, and stayed at No. 2 for three weeks in the US. Justin Hayward says, ‘So many of the venues we are playing this year hold warm and special memories for me going right back. Music brings us a world of imagination and I looking forward to being right there in the middle of that’. With each album, Oldfield expands on the incredible themes and theatrical variations he first composed at 17 years old, continually innovating and pushing boundaries. Robin, the Grammy-nominated Musical Director of the tour show, was completely mesmerised by Tubular Bells the moment he heard it. He studied Composition at the Royal College of Music, spent several years touring the world as a piano player and was the principal pianist of the National Youth Jazz Orchestra, before meeting Mike Oldfield over 30 years ago. Smith has collaborated with Oldfield for more than three decades, with performances of various Tubular Bells albums at iconic locations such as Edinburgh Castle, Horse Guards Parade and the 2012 Olympic Games Opening Ceremony. ‘As part of this incredible year where we have played sell out shows at Cadogan Hall, the Royal Festival Hall and Sydney Opera House, it’s a great pleasure and we are certainly thrilled to continue our musical journey in the UK. Two of the finest UK Rhythm 'n' Blues bands on one incredible bill. Nine Below Zero released their classic debut LP 'Live at the Marquee' in 1980, the band kept the momentum going with 'Don’t Point Your Finger' in 1981 before releasing their third and final LP on A&M Records, 'Third Degree' (1982). Nine Below Zero toured with The Who and The Kinks around the time of this LP and also appeared on 'The Old Grey Whistle Test', and 'The South Bank Show'. Dr. Feelgood formed on Canvey Island in Essex in the early 1970’s and have enjoyed a string of hit singles in many countries including 'Milk & Alcohol', 'Down at the Doctors', 'Roxette', 'She’s a Wind Up' and 'See You Later Alligator'. Formed in London, UK, Heatwave are a funk/disco group who came into international success in the mid-70s and 80s, known for the hits, “Boogie Nights,” “Always and Forever” and “The Groove Line.” The band came together initially when Germany based active serving American serviceman, Johnnie Wilder, formed his band ‘Johnnie Wilder's Chicago Heatwave’. Rod Temperton answered an advert and flew to Germany to join the band. Johnnie then invited his brother, Keith, to fly over to Germany and join the band. Johnnie Wilder, Keith Wilder, Ernest "Bilbo" Berger, Erick Johns. Mario Mantese and Rod Temperton moved to London in 1975 and shortened the name to the now recognisable, HEATWAVE. With songwriter/keyboardist, Rod Temperton, Heatwave managed to create an eclectic sound that pushed their music well ahead of their peers, becoming pioneers in their genre. They soon gained the attention of GTO Records, with their simple disco beats and heavy funk grooves. They began recording their debut album but with the loss of Jesse Whitens, they found a replacement in Roy Carter and began recording again, releasing a string of singles culminating in the hit disco anthem, 1977’s “Boogie Nights.” The song hit number two in the UK charts and also became a top five hit in America. Their debut album appeared later that year, titled “Too Hot to Handle” peaking at number five in the R&B charts. By the end of the year, they had also gained a number two hit in the US with their soul ballad, “Always and Forever.” Heatwave continue to tour with some old and some new members and are still a welcome sound to hear with their evergreen soul anthems like Boogie Nights, Always and Forever, Groove Line and many more, keeping the Heatwave legacy going strong!

Disco-soul group Change are bringing The Very Best of Change to the Cliffs Pavilion, celebrating their greatest hits on Friday 7th May 2027. Formed in Bologna, Italy in 1980, Change quickly found success with their Chic-inspired grooves and soulful pop-R&B-oriented sound as their debut album The Glow of Love, which featured vocals from Luther Vandross and Jocelyn Brown, soared to the Top 10 on the Billboard Disco Charts. The title track from their first album was later sampled by Janet Jackson on her 2001 hit single All for You. Change’s other albums include Miracles (1981) which features club hits Paradise and Hold Tight and topped the Billboard Disco Charts, Sharing Your Love (1982), This Is Your Time (1983), Change of Heart (1984) and Turn On Your Radio (1985).
