It’s 1866 and Charles Dickens is a Victorian Superstar. Embarking on an epic tour of Great Britain and America, Dickens was like a literary rock star, his one-man performances of his most famous works packed theatres to the rafters. But away from the footlights, he bore shameful secrets and a lifestyle unbecoming of a Victorian gentleman.
Charles Dickens: The Readings And The Rumours is a brand-new co-production from Dickens Theatre Company and the Palace Theatre, featuring excerpts from Oliver Twist, A Christmas Carol and The Pickwick Papers.
Westcliff-based (occasional) Eastenders actor Ryan Philpott plays Dickens and delves into the clandestine affairs of the world’s greatest writer as Dickens’ life draws to its end, in this world premiere play, made in Southend!
