We’re delighted to welcome the Lviv National Philharmonic of Ukraine to G Live to open the 2024/25 season. In the first half of the concert the orchestra will perform Rossini’s light-hearted overture to his twentieth opera, The Thieving Magpie which he wrote when he was just 25! Followed by Sibelius’ dark and unsettling Symphony No. 4 written during a period of intense personal crisis which is evident throughout the work.
In the second half of the programme the orchestra will be joined by the distinguished Czech cellist Jiří Bárta to perform perhaps the most famous of all concertos written for the instrument, Elgar’s Cello Concerto in E minor; intimate, highly-concentrated with universal appeal. Originally written as piano duets and later orchestrated, a selection of Dvořák’s Slavonic Dances bring the concert to a close.
