Fussy, cantankerous novelist Charles Condomine is after authenticity for his latest novel, and so he and his second wife, Ruth, host an evening with the eccentric and flighty medium, Madame Arcati. But when the seance conjures up the ghost of his late first wife, Elvira, whom only Charles can see and hear, their tranquil life descends into chaos. Determined to be the sole recipient of Charles’s attention, Elvira decides he must join her in eternity, but things don’t quite go according to plan…
